Oppo A55s 5G is the latest addition to Oppo’s ever-expanding lineup of low-cost 5G phones. It made its debut in Japan, where it will go on sale next week. The 5G Oppo A55 debuted alongside the 4G Oppo A55, sharing a similar design and spec sheet. However, because it was a quiet launch with no press release, it’s unclear when (or if) Oppo intends to bring the A55s 5G to more markets.

If you’ve seen the original Oppo A55, you’ll recognize the A55s 5G. We’re looking at the same generic camera rectangle with chamfered back and off-center hole punch cutout that we’ve seen before. Except that the new Oppo A53s sequel now comes in sleek mint and jet black finishes.
The Oppo A55s 5G also includes a much-needed screen upgrade over the Oppo A55. It refreshes at a responsive 90Hz and has a maximum resolution of 1080P. (unlike the 60Hz, 720P screen on the Oppo A55.) In addition, the O-hole cutout houses an 8MP front-facing camera.

The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset. It is constructed on an 8nm process node and outperforms all other chips in the 4-series. The 64GB of internal storage feels underwhelming for a phone in this price range from Oppo. But, at the very least, it’s expandable via an SD card. The camera system, which includes 13MP f/2.2 and 2MP lenses, is nothing to write home about.
