Oppo K9s goes official with Snapdragon 778G, 6.59″ 120Hz LCD

The Oppo K9s has arrived – at least in China – right on time. The s-phone is a Snapdragon 778G-powered alternative to last month’s K9 Pro, as well as an upgrade over the original K9. Here’s a comparison of the two.
With its 6.59″ display, the K9s are larger than both. This is an IPS LCD, as opposed to the other two (instead of AMOLED). It has a refresh rate of 120 Hz (the same as the Pro) and a touch sampling rate of 240 Hz, as well as 1080p+ resolution and “Panda Glass” protection. There is no HDR support, but it does cover the entire DCI-P3 color space (and 96 percent of NTSC). The maximum brightness of the panel is 600 nits.

Because of the switch to LCD, the fingerprint reader had to be relocated to the phone’s side. The 16 MP selfie camera is largely the same as on the Pro, with the exception of a brighter aperture of f/2.0.

Meanwhile, the rear camera remains essentially unchanged. It begins with a 64 MP main camera equipped with a 26 mm f/1.7 lens. This one can record 4K video at 30 frames per second (with electronic stabilization). The 120o ultra-wide-angle camera comes next, followed by a 2 MP macro camera.
Oppo was able to fit a larger battery, 5,000 mAh, on the K9s thanks to the larger display (up from 4,500 mAh on the Pro). It doesn’t charge as quickly as previous models, but at 30W, it’s no slouch either – a full charge takes 59 minutes.

A USB-C 2.0 port is used for charging, and there is also a 3.5 mm headphone jack nearby. Wireless connectivity options include 5G, Wi-Fi 6 (ax), and Bluetooth 5.2. (with aptX HD, LDAC, and LHDC codecs).

There are two possible configurations. The first option comes with 6 GB of RAM (LPDDR4x, 2,133 MHz dual-channel) and 128 GB of storage (UFS 2.2 Gear 4, two-lane), while the second comes with 8 GB of RAM. It’s worth noting that there’s a microSD slot for additional storage and virtual RAM for up to 5 GB more. A 0.15 mm sheet of graphite keeps the chipset cool by carrying more heat to the vapor chamber. The phone comes pre-installed with Color OS 11.2 based on Android 11.

Fans in China can already reserve an Oppo K9s for CNY 1,700 for the 6/128 GB phone (roughly $265/€230/20,000). CNY 1,900 ($300/€255/22,250) for the 8/128 GB model. A charger, a cable, and a protective case are included in the retail package. The phone will be available beginning November 1 in China (no word yet on global availability).
