Over the last few months, rumours have circulated that Google’s incoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will have a longer support window than normal, and today we have some actual rumoured numbers to consider.
After its formal introduction later this month, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will receive four major Android updates as well as five years of security fixes, according to an unsubstantiated rumour.
If this is correct, the two Pixels released in 2021 will be updated all the way to Android 16 in 2025, and security updates will be provided until October 2026.
It would be the first time Google has committed to such a long support period, and if it follows through on its promise, it will be on par with Apple in terms of gadget longevity (at least software-wise).
It’s unclear whether this will help the Pixel line become more successful in the future, but it all depends on how you (and Google) define success. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will only be available in a few regions, and distribution, possibly even more than software support, is critical to success.
